bands i've been to see in the past few decades... jimmy page/robert plant... robert plant/alison krauss... kiss (twice)... def leppard (three times)... metallica... dave matthews band... moody blues... nine inch nails (twice)... tenacious d... tricky... tool... alanis morrisette... lyle lovett (twice)... sting... john denver... they might be giants... violent femmes... blue man group... bob dylan... willie nelson... hot club of cowtown... gravity kills... republica... adam and the ants... general public... hall and oates... electric light orchestra... rusted root... billy squire (twice.. funny story there.. first saw him in the eighties with def lep opening. i mainly went to see lep but i dig squire and thought i'd hang around. halfway into the first song, i walked out. he came out in pink satin pants and immediately began humping the stage to whatever song he was playing. that was all i needed. i prefer frankie goes to hollywood. the second time was 2 decades later in the radio station's studio when i interviewed him on the air... he played 3 or 4 acoustic songs for me that were amazing. he didn't hump anything. i enjoyed it immensely. the songs. well, the him not humping anything too.) and saw kid rock for a grand total of about 30 seconds. went to see the D who were the opening act, went backstage to meet jack and kyle, got an autograph, went back out to the arena, took in about 30 seconds of kid rock's opening song and walked out. really, do you NEED 20 half naked chicks prancing around onstage to put on a great show? if i want that, i'll head down to solid platinum (local strip club). i want music. don't get me wrong, i dig some kid rock stuff but can do without the live hooplah. (the D were amazing, by the way)
what brings this up? well, last friday night i went to the nine inch nails show at rupp on his lights in the sky over north america tour... for those who don't know the story, i went to a nin concert back in 2006 on the with teeth tour. i was SO apprehensive about going to the show that i put off deciding whether or not to make the trek till the very last minute. i had the wife drop me at rupp, went in, caught the last 10 minutes of a horrible opening act and then the nails show started. i made it about 45 minutes into the show before i just couldn't take the kids jumping around and screaming into their cellphones and blocking the view with the cellphones taking pics of the stage and so on and so on. not to mention that i felt massively out of place. mister 40 something in his jeans, black tshirt and safari shirt. and around me, a sea of goth, emo and the next generation of columbine kids. so yea. i took off like a bat out of hell. maybe got to see 4 or 5 songs total but wasn't into it so it didn't leave much of an impression. always regretted not elbowing some people out of my vicinity so i could enjoy the show that night. well, i got to rectify the situation last week. nin was in town for a date on the aforementioned lights in the sky tour, i had tickets from my buds in the ville and i decided hell or high water i was gonna go. and i did. and stayed for all but the encore. holy SHIT, what a show! that was easily in my top 5 concerts of all time. non-stop energy, sound was great which is very unusual for rupp... the stage lighting and screens were amazing. if you are even a tiny bit of a nin fan, GO see the show if it comes to your area. every song just kicked ass... and from what i've read on the nin boards, the lexington show was a standout. or so the ninheads say. and i get to relive the show from different angles too! within 12 hours of the show ending, every song from the show had been posted on youtube. no shit. AND there's some guy out there called moke that has put out four mp3s from the show and they are cd quality! WOO! again, the stage lights/screens stuff will blow your mind. i can't even begin to describe what they did. just go search over at youtube... hell, i'll even give you a handy link to the search results - CLICK HERE, SPARKY! wow. that's a lotta clips. oh and i did have one distinct advantage this time - the tix the guys got me were in the center of a set of 4 unclaimed seats. MUAHAHAHAH! which meant i had all the room i could possibly want!! WOOOO for me! alright, just had that going thru my mind and figured i'd put virtual pen to screen. oh and by the way, i'm on vacation, for the curious. doing... NOTHING. a little laundry... a few errands... but otherwise, being a sloth. slept in till 9 or 10 the last three days. gonna hurt getting my sleep schedule back next week. sigh. alright, off to play a little grand theft auto and watch the latest remastering of "the evil dead"... one of the top 10 films of all time.
